Brandi's Biography
Brandi Noel Ogburn was born on October 3, 1978 in Rocky Mount, NC, to Keith and Connie Ogburn. She grew up on a farm in Darlington, with her older sister, Nicole, and attended Halifax Academy from kindergarten through graduation. She graduated third in her class on June 6, 1996.
She was a child who loved to go outside and play. She had a little border collie named Sandy and the two of them would explore the fields beside our house trying to find old artifacts. We gave Brandi a metal detector one Christmas and she enjoyed using it so much that she thought about becoming an archeologist or paleontologist when she grew up.
Brandi saw the beauty in everything outdoors, including rocks. She loved to collect them and study their colors and textures. Brandi loved to read and learn as much as possible about everything. She found this to be a valuable asset not only in schoolwork, but also when she participated in the Halifax County History Bowl as a seventh grader and the Halifax County Quiz Bowl as a senior.
Brandi participated in many activities in school, while striving for excellence in her schoolwork. One of her many accomplishments was being on the honor roll throughout her school years. She received a citizenship award, attended NC Tar Heel Girls’ State, was a member of the Junior and Senior Beta Clubs and was a marshal for the graduating class. Based on her outstanding academic performance, she qualified for the annual Talent Search by the Duke University Talent Identification Program. Brandi served her school in the Student Government Association and was a member of the Junior Varsity basketball team. Brandi was on the Homecoming Court several times while in high school and was featured in Who’s Who Among American High School Students.
Brandi read her Bible and attended church. At the age of eight, she decided the time was right to confess her faith and be baptized. She joined First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids.
Brandi enjoyed doing many activities with her family and friends. She liked to waterski, swim, fish, and deer hunt. She also enjoyed doing all the things every teenager would do. Hanging out with her friends, listening to music which ranged from country to rock to Gaelic. She enjoyed playing games such as Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly, Scrabble, and others with her family. The education she received through reading enabled her to win frequently.
Brandi liked to watch movies and two of her favorites were Gone with the Wind and Titanic. Folks who knew Brandi will tell you that she was a sweet girl and a good friend. She was a lot of fun to be with. She could entertain people with her impersonations. Her first one was when she went to see E.T. If you remember the movie, the character would say, “E T phone home.” She came out of the movie and could imitate that voice exactly. From then on, she could listen to different voices and accents and sound just like them.
She was very serious, though, when it came to school. While Brandi was in high school, she decided to become a nurse. She talked of specializing in geriatrics, as she had a unique rapport with older people, as well as a great deal of compassion for them. Brandi completed the pre-nursing classes at Halifax Community College and was doing very well in the first level of nursing. She was employed as a heart monitor tech in the Intensive Care Unit at Halifax Regional Medical Center and worked part-time. She saw first-hand how important it was to do your very best. Whatever field of nursing she would have entered, we feel she would have been a dedicated nurse.
Brandi died on November 21, 1998 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was a sweet, caring, honest, and much loved young lady, proud to be from North Carolina and a Southerner. She is buried in the Warren Family Cemetery close to her home.
Brandi’s not here to complete her education and go on to help people the way we thought she would. That is why we established the Brandi Noel Ogburn Memorial Nursing Scholarship in her memory. If this award can help each recipient to achieve their goals, then Brandi has helped people after all. This scholarship has given us an opportunity to carry on Brandi’s dream.
As each student continues their education to become a nurse, we hope this will help to prepare them for a rewarding profession; one that will enable them to touch many lives in a profound way, just as Brandi did.
